McCain Gets Caught Lying By Letterman

(UPDATE at the bottom)

This is the type of picture that David Letterman wanted to see tonight, but McCain cancelled on him citing the need to hurry back to Washington to address the financial crisis.

What McCain didn’t anticipate was Letterman calling his bluff and revealing that he was actually taping a live interview with Katie Couric at the same time Dave was taping.

Ouch:

Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”

Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, “You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.” And he joked: “I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”

“He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sarah Palin. Where is she?”

“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”

Listen folks, say what you will about McCain’s proposal to suspend his campaign, but if you’re going to cancel on David Letterman saying you have to be in another city, rule #1 on the list is don’t then tape a live interview at the same time in the SAME CITY.

What was McCain thinking???

UPDATE
NY Times fills in a few more details about just how bad this is going to be for McCain…

Even after Mr. Letterman brought out Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC host and vituperative Republican critic as the substitute guest for Mr. McCain, he continued to assail Mr. McCain for the decision to cancel the appearance. His critique reached a high point when he learned that at the very moment Mr. McCain was supposed to be on the couch next to him being interviewed, the senator was at the CBS News center three blocks away in Manhattan, getting ready to be interviewed by the CBS News anchor, Katie Couric.

Mr. Letterman ordered his director to put on a live feed from that location, which showed Mr. McCain getting made up to go on with Ms. Couric. “He doesn’t seem to be racing to the airport,” Mr. Letterman observed.

After listening to some questions from Ms. Couric, Mr. Letterman said, “Hey, John, I’ve got a question: You need a lift to the airport?”

Listen, I think all of us can understand why McCain wanted to talk to Couric about more serious matters instead of appearing on Letterman. But instead of lying, it would have been just as easy to say, “Hey, I need to be on the national news tonight because of this crisis. Can we reschedule?”

Long story short, whatever fallout happens from this is McCain’s own fault.

What an epic blunder on McCain’s part.

He’s getting reamed by David Letterman, and everyone everywhere is mocking his inability to focus on the economy and a debate at the same time. In other words, unfit to be president.

Such a transparent political stunt, being called out in the wake of his trashing of the media. Added bonus, Palin comes out of her bubble to look like a fool with Katy Couric.

It doesn’t get much better for Obama. Now McCain is threatening no debate unless there is a deal by tomorrow, so he will accomplish the double win of looking like an impetuous coward, and also alienating his base, which was counting on him voting against a bailout in order to reclaim his phony maverick reputation.

here’s hoping for a McCain meltdown in the polls, maybe he is as over the hill as some people have been saying, to think he can blow off Letterman like this. Now he’ll have his excuse why he and Palin won’t appear on Letterman.

I’m thinking that this might turn out to be for McCain what “Ronald Reagan will raise your taxes” was for Walter Mondale…

Grampie McCain is so old maybe he just forgot or got lost and ended up with Katie?
