The Blame Game Begins

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Barack, Democrats, Economy, Legislation, McCain, Republicans

McCain and House Republicans blame Obama and the Democrats.

Obama doesn’t really blame anybody and calls for calm.

Meanwhile…the quote that could very well sink McCain in all of this came from his top campaign strategist, Steve Schmidt yesterday on Meet The Press…

“What Senator McCain was able to do was to help bring all of the parties to the table, including the House Republicans, whose votes were needed to pass this.”

You can’t claim leadership on an issue and take credit for its success beforehand, and then turn around and blame Dems when 60% of them voted for the measure and almost 70% of your Republican compadres voted against it.

What nonsense.

And, by the way, how irrelevant is Bush now? It’s like he doesn’t even exist.

I’m willing to bet Bush had wished he had saved some political capital so he might have some hope of salvaging his (at least immediate) legacy. He does appear to be for the most part irrelevant.

Indeed, the big irony in the bailout’s defeat is that it was torpedoed by House Republicans acting against Bush.

And yeah, as much as I hate to admit it, McCain is probably screwed now, no matter how well he or Palin do in the remaining debates. Congratulations Barack Obama, after all is said and done you have likely won your way into the White House by dint of sheer (un)fortunate happenstance.

GOP and McCain do come out looking bad and whinny from all of this. You can’t do the daring rescue dance to get the credit and then get none of the blame when it fails. I’m worried about where we go now.
