From The Department Of “ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!”

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Barack, Blogging, Bush, WTF?

This from Powerline’s John Hinderaker…

Obama thinks he is a good talker, but he is often undisciplined when he speaks. He needs to understand that as President, his words will be scrutinized and will have impact whether he intends it or not.

In this regard, President Bush is an excellent model; Obama should take a lesson from his example. Bush never gets sloppy when he is speaking publicly. He chooses his words with care and precision, which is why his style sometimes seems halting. In the eight years he has been President, it is remarkable how few gaffes or verbal blunders he has committed.

If Obama doesn’t raise his standards, he will exceed Bush’s total before he is inaugurated.

Oh. My. God.

What else can you say to that level of crazy? It’s obviously so divorced from reality it makes your head spin wondering how anybody could watch Bush over the past 8 years make one verbal gaffe after another and think he’d be an “excellent model” for Obama.

Excuse me, but I have to go beat my head against a wall.

What does this do to the meme that Obama only got this far because he’s such a smooth talker?

  2. mark Says:

I take it this guy doesn’t watch David Letterman, or, let me put it this way, has NEVER watched David Letterman, because EVERY NIGHT for years, a regular feature is “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” which ALWAYS has a gaffe by Bush, ones so bad they make you cringe.

Every. Night. Never. A. Shortage. Of. Material.

  3. Ed Says:

Republicans are the epitome of hypocrisy. In their world, Obama is the most liberal senator, until he won and then morphed into moderate who won by running a Reaganesque campaign. He is just a good speechmaker, until he morphed into a gaffe machine after winning. The country is center-right, despite the fact that every poll indicates the opposite and most far right conservatives who primaried incumbent moderate Republicans lost their elections.

The good news: no one is listening to these pundits. For proof, please refer to the election results. Even better news: by all accounts, the Republicans are too stupid to realize their brand is in the toilet, and they are going to continue to try to push their rejected, losing politics to the their own detriment.

  4. leapsecond Says:

If that’s not a satire… Man, that guy is an idiot.

  5. Trescml Says:

One of the stages of grief is denial. I don’t think this guy has moved past that stage yet.

  6. George Mauer Says:

Is it possible that no, he was not indeed serious?

  7. bizen Says:

This is just more of Rove’s “Reality is what we say it is.”

  8. mike mcEachran Says:

The thing is, you don’t even have to dig very far to find all these utterly idiotic right wingers twisting in the wind. Oh my god is right. Again, if they weren’t so dangerous, this would be fun to watch.

  9. Reliant Says:

Are you sure this is a serious post? It sounds like something out of Theonion

  10. Whitney Drake Says:

I’m sorry, it took me far too many tries to get beyond “Obama thinks he’s a good talker” to even begin to take this seriously.

Whether this is a delusional right winger or someone attempting satire and slightly missing the mark, it’s still hilarious.

  11. Chris Says:

That was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. I’m surprised that the guy who wrote is actually intelligent enough to use a computer to post a blog. It’s literally insane to even remotely thing that Bush was a good public speaker.

  12. Rich Says:

Umm…haven’t any of you actually heard Obama speak when he’s not reading from a teleprompter??

He’s a pretty good reader, but he can’t think and speak at the same time.

I’m not saying that Bush is a “role model of public speaking”, but uhhh, ummmm, well, mmmm, you know, ahhh, he could, ummm, use a little, uhhh, mmmm, help when, uhhh, he’s not reading, mmmm, a teleprompter in public.

Then there’s Biden…..holy shit….I’m surprised Obama hasn’t pushed him in front of a bus yet, just to get rid of him.

  13. Avinash_Tyagi Says:

Saying Uhh, and umm, is not a sign of a bad speaker, in fact its more a sing of a thoughtful person, a person who is searching for the right way to phrase something

  14. ExiledIndependent Says:

Avi, public speaking 101 says that if you need to think, do so silently. Verbalized pauses are sloppy and amateurish. Not saying Obama is, but if we were to use a poker analogy, when Obama begins verbalizing his pauses, it’s typically around a subject that is delicate. He’d clearly like to craft an eloquent response.

Nothing wrong with that at all, but when we start pardoning a candidates flaws, especially minor ones like this, it smacks of ideology getting in the way of honest assessment. I hope Obama does great things for our country, but he’s not going to be perfect, nor should we expect him to be. You’re a more genuine supporter when you can note the good along with the flaws.

  15. NH Says:

“Umm…haven’t any of you actually heard Obama speak when he’s not reading from a teleprompter??

He’s a pretty good reader, but he can’t think and speak at the same time.”

Well he was good enough to whip McCain’s ass three times in debate…

  16. Chris Says:

Don’t try to deflect the point of this - that this joke is saying that Bush is a better public speaker.

  17. Kelly Says:

This is not a joke. This guy is serious. I read his blog posts for the past month after reading these absurd comments. In the full text of his blog he points out Obama’s gaff in mentioning Nancy Reagan having a seance and he pointed to another incident that actually wash’t a gaff. This guy is a conservative. He is appearing on Hannity and Combs this week. Need I say more.

  18. Andrew Says:

    1. I think that guy is nuts.

    2. Did anyone else see an advert for pain killers following the last line where Justin wrote, “Excuse me, but I have to go beat my head against a wall.”

  19. REPUBLIDIOTS Says:

This guy is a typical Republidiot. By the stratagem of “simple assertion”, he tries to win the argument. He asserts totally non-factual statements about Bush and Obama. Bush is not a careful speaker. His hesitation comes from ineptitude, confusion, stupidity, rigidity of mind and lack of curiousity. Obama is not a bad speaker. He shows care in his thoughts, words, facts and ideation.

Hinderaker is a poltroon, liar, obfuscator, and, to top it off, a damned fool.

  20. gabriel Says:

@Andrew: Yeah, its targeted advertising. If he had wrote something about telescopes there would have been telescope ads.

Anyways, this guy is nuts. That’s the kind of guy that I just want to kill in the balls. What a weasle! Here’s the kicker…this guy actually thinks what he’s saying is RIGHT! and he continues on to go on AIR with these remarks! I hope he has his “screw the world” money put away already.

These are the kinds of people that have been choosing our presidents? Thats OK, atleast he didnt accuse Obama of being the Antichrist like I had a few people personally tell me. A waitress I had, actually told me to go get saved if Obama wins. Needless to say, she didn’t get a tip.

  21. Hyrum Says:

It doesn’t matter how many blunders obama make if Big Media will only show him talking smooth. If Big Media only wanted to show President bush talking smooth we would all think differently of him.

  22. Donna Says:

Ah, yes, the media conspiracy! It’s not that Obama’s a highly educated man, accustomed to speaking in front of large audiences, with an excellent grasp of rhetoric. It’s just the media picking and choosing what tapes to air to make him look good! They’re all in the tank!

Obviously there is no far-right media which would LOVE for Obama to make an embarrasing gaffe… nope…. nothing like that around here *coughFoxNewscough*

  23. KublaiCon Says:

    Satire.
