Quote Of The Day

“Let me tell you something, if Democrats take the White House and pass a big-government healthcare plan, that’s it. Game over. Government will dominate the economy like it does in Europe. Conservatives will spend the rest of their lives trying to turn things around and they will fail.”
- GOP strategist talking about Tom Daschle’s plan to provide health for all

I see his or her point, but I don’t agree.

Conservatism isn’t dead, but just like anything else, it will have to change somewhat to address the realities of a new marketplace that isn’t driven by the trickle down theories of the 80s. But that’s what parties do decade after decade, and this situation will be no different.

The messiest fight that conservatives will have is with their evangelical, wedge-issue loving base that is crippling the party with independent, hispanic and younger voters.

Shifting gears back to healthcare…

Whereas I didn’t think some comprehensive package would be doable in Obama’s first term, I think he’ll definitely try to start laying the groundwork now for a vote in 2010 after the midterms. And even the healthcare companies seem to be on board…

The industry’s trade organization now says it would accept new rules requiring them to cover pre-existing conditions as long as there was a universal mandate for all Americans to have health insurance.

Did you ever think you’d see the day?

We are born, we die, and in-between, we all need a touch-up and a little paint.

It’s high time we had universal healthcare in the United States.

    Yes, it is…

I’ll take a bet on this one. His best shot at getting this done is right away. He’ll be in the honeymoon period, the GOP is on their heels, he is enjoying the most support he will have for his entire administration (it always works that way), he needs to placate the left wing, and most Americans really want something done on health care. It has broad base support. It’ll be a top priority, and he will get it through. The fact is, the GOP does not have any real basis to oppose it, as they campaigned on a variation on the theme. Oh sure - there will be a lot of sturm and drung over the details, but some version of Health Care will be passed by summer. A high visibility promise kept (even if it does not look exactly like the campaign version) to kick things off right.

As someone who’s wife had breast cancer, and now finds it almost impossible to find health insurance, tell me why Universal Health coverage is a bad thing.

Its not going to be what you guys think. It will resemble “Romney Care” here in Massachusetts. It is a law that requires you to sign up for private health care. Conservatives do not necesarily oppose this.

  5. Rick Cain Says:

I think any nationalized health care plan will be more of a catch net with limited benefits. That way it will be inexpensive, and will cover preventive care, early diagnosis and treatment, a limited drug schedule, and DME. In any case it will be quite helpful for the struggling wage worker that can’t even afford to step into a minor emergency clinic.
