Generic Congressional Repubs Beat Generic Congressional Dems

Gallup is out with a poll that suggests more problems for the Dems and a 10 point shift in voter preference since July.

First, the numbers…

The bigger news here? Independents are swinging wildly in favor of the generic Republicans.

There’s about a year to go before the 2010 elections, but this shift does not bode well for Dems. I still don’t think that Repubs can regain any majorities, but if we start seeing more Independents breaking right, it could be a very bad night for the donkeys.

More as it develops…

[...] the growing dissatisfaction independents have with the Democratic Party. A recent poll shows Democrats losing a generic congressional ballot, a sea change from the two most recent elections. But independents [...]

Those pesky independents … they keep insisting that the major parties actually DO something other than talk and pat themselves on the back!

It’s a mistake to read more into this than a suggestion for some small potential. The GOP still has to field local candidates that are more appealing.

If asked. I wonder what independents would identify as the primary cause for this shift? If I had to guess, I think that independents supported Obama with a sense that he sounded like a sensible and fair-minded guy, not a cookie-cutter liberal. It was the appeal of Obama that brought independent support to the democrats,

And now, I think independents are extremely concerned about the unabated flow of red ink and how that can undermine our long-term prosperity. The democrats need to come up with a plan to move quickly back towards a balance of what we spend with what we collect. The next budget has to veer downward very substantially, not cosmetically. We can’t collect 3 and spend 4 or more for much longer. We’ll collapse.

If Obama is a smart leader, he’ll do what he has to to get healthcare reform passed within the next 2 or 3 months, and then he’ll veer rightward in either a noticeable way or a cagey way. Hopefully cap and trade will be the sacrificial lamb.
