If You Only Watch One Crazy, Unhinged Stump Speech Today, Make It Phil Davison’s

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Comedy, Republicans, Video

I guarantee you’ll laugh your ass off if you watch Councilman Phil Davison of Minerva, Ohio give what has to be considered the worst/best stump speech in the history of stump speeches.

He will not apologize for his tone tonight! Did you hear him?!? He will not do it!!!

And did you catch the part where he says he has a Masters in Communication? Classic.

By the way, he didn’t win the nomination for Stark County treasurer. Still, I wonder how close the vote was.

UPDATE:
Phil Davison responds to the AP and says he would have done it the same way.

Hmmm…really? You actually want people to think you’re a nut? You don’t have enough self awareness to see how that came off?

Oh well. Phil Davison’s political career is not long for this world.

Is this going to be a new feature? Speeches by kooky unhinged local politicians who lost in their bid to win a minor office at the county level?

BTW, I didn’t laugh once. I thought it was kind of sad. I am always surprised when folks find stuff like this amusing. But then, I didn’t think Borat was funny either… .

And again, for the love of God, please ratchet down the captcha. I’m begging you.

  3. Chris Says:

Is he like… playing at being insane?

  4. Chris Says:

kranky i just refresh the captcha until something easy comes up.

  5. kranky kritter Says:

Chris, I do that too, but it’s getting worse and worse, sometimes I need 15 or 20 refreshes. Last time I got some audio captcha test that played gibberish I was supposed to type.

  6. Chris Says:

    haha

    :P

kranky, you seriously didn’t find that amusing? And I think it’s pretty obvious why I posted it…because it’s hilarious. I do get to have fun every now and again. I am allowed. And since this is quite possibly the only time I’ve ever put something like this up, I think we’ll all be okay.

  8. Chris Says:

i found it amusing enough to repost the video on some forums. I think the only people that were saddened by it were those in Ohio.

FWIW Justin, I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t have posted it, You like it, your site, you absolutely do get to have fun with it. I have no problem with that.

I was only describing my reaction and this my puzzlement at yours. Here’s the thing. Even though I tend towards lengthy and largely serious posts, in everyday life I am considered an extremely funny guy by my friends and colleagues. I love to make people laugh. And I’m really pretty good at it.

But loosely thinking, there is a certain class of items that many folks find funny but which instead make me sad or simply make me want to cringe. When I see clips of people who aren’t just a little kooky but instead seem like they are in danger of truly losing it, to the point where they need a quiet room and some sedation, and maybe a script for psych meds, then no, I don’t find it amusing.

But in all seriousness, that’s just my $.02. I have a psych degree, and have experience with and understanding of incipient mental illness, I’ve visited friends and relatives in psych wards. Never as a patient, thank god. So for me, there’s a point I recognize where instead of laughing, you become concerned. And in general, my sense of mental stability is that most folks are closer to the edge than they would ever believe.

I understand that many people are fortunate enough to have little or NO experience with true mental distress, the kind of distress which classifies as real mental illness or getting too close to the line where you go over the edge. God bless folks who haven’t experienced such stuff. I truly hope they never have to find out about it. There’s no harm in such folks laughing a youtube clip. I’m ok with the idea that other folks enjoy it. It’s not my cup of tea.
