Top Muslim Leaders Say “Not In Our Name”

I love to read news like this.

Finally, we hearing from the top leaders of Islam in the US that they will no longer stand for the perversion of their religion to excuse cowardly terrorist acts. Not In Our Name!

From Reuters:

“Having our religious scholars side by side with our community leaders leaves no room for anybody to suggest that Islam and Muslims condone or support any forms or acts of terrorism,” said Esam Omeish, president of the Muslim American Society, one of the groups which announced the fatwa.

Ibrahim Hooper, spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said it was the first time Muslims in North America had issued an anti-terrorism edict, although they had repeatedly condemned such acts of violence.

[..]

Hooper said Thursday’s religious ruling, issued by the Fiqh Council of North America, said: “We clearly and strongly state (that) all acts of terrorism targeting civilians are ‘haram’ (forbidden) in Islam.”

I want to make sure that all of those people who are reading this make sure they understand the implications. These are strong Muslims who are speaking out and issuing a “fatwa” to tell all followers that this is wrong, wrong, wrong. More voices will follow. Let’s encourage that instead of saying that the whole of Islamic thought is to blame.
I seen people comment to this effect on some of our posts and it just makes my stomach turn.

You can’t define the majority by the minority, and hopefully stories like this will help the small minority on this site who condemn Islam to realize that.

(Hat Tip: Powerline)

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, Muslims that dare to challenge the agenda and/or methods of Islamic supremacists are basically making themselves enemies of the supremacists (who regard Muslim opponents as having abandoned Islam), and therefore potential targets themselves. Fear of reprisal is probably the main reason so many American Muslims have stayed on the sidelines for as long as they have. That they’re coming out now suggests that they’re finally getting over that fear and ready to take a stand to prevent the Islamic supremacists from tainting their faith any further.

Whoops, I wasn’t quite finished. :) I meant to add that these American Muslim leaders are showing bravery for standing up to the extremists, and should be commended for that bravery.

And what is the powerline-approved response? Vilify the messanger:

I’m just curious: how is demonstrating that the fatwa is bogus, and shedding light on the questionable (to put it very mildly) activities of those involved “vilification” … or “powerline-approved” for that matter?

    Just askin’.

Ahmadinajad says that Iran is pursuing nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. I guess we should take his word for it. Powerline always seems to be vilifying that guy too!

Besides, CAIR condemning terrorism is like the Ku Klux Klan condemning lynching. I guess its time for the President to get a photo-op while shaking the hand of the Grand Dragon.

    Good job.
