Couple of White Guys Up to No Good

Here are two cases that don’t fit the typical ‘racial profile’ for terrorists. Nonetheless, they were stopped. (Thank goodness.)

Yesterday:
CNN.com: Man arrested with suspected explosive at airport

Today:
CNN.com: Police arrest armed man at U.N. garage

    Hmmm. I might as well ask the question before someone else does. Would we run a headline that said “Couple of black guys up to no good.”

    As I understand it, the current worldwide spate of terrorism involves a religion — Islam — not a race. If I’m wrong about that, please inform me. What does a Muslim look like? You can’t profile a religion on appearance.

    Perfectly true, and since that is still a common mistake, with people looking for Arabs and shooting at Brazilians for instance, it is very important that Muslims may be Chechen, who look more Caucasian, literally, than Russians do, or Filipino or Indonesian guys who happen to be working the Alaskan fleet.

    No I wouldn’t have run with a headline like that. There is a double standard there, but I’m not sure why. Maybe it relates to the convention that a black person is allowed to say the “n” word but a white person isn’t. I’m a white guy, so I can mention that these guys are too.

    I did so for illustrative reasons. (They do not fit the mold of ‘young Arabic male’ that people have been discussing singling out for ‘profiling’ in security efforts.)

    Maybe I was wrong to do it, but I always have done “open mouth insert foot” better than P.C.

    I agree with the choice of headline here. I think it’s important to illustrate that the “terrorists” aren’t limited to the “brown sand people”. Of course, I’ve never been much for PC either. :D
