Favorite Questions From CNN/YouTube Debate

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Video

I loved this debate. There’s just something about non-camera ready, awkward Americans getting to ask their leaders real questions that aren’t necessarily rehearsed.

Here are some of my favorites…

Who would you pick as a Republican running mate?

Is it OK to cite religion as a reason to deny gay rights?

Would you agree to be paid the minimum wage?

Extend Social Security taxes to earnings over $95k?

The Taxes Song

Which one was your favorite?

I despise the taxes song because like so many people who whine about taxes pretty much everything he cited were local taxes that have nothing to do with the federal government.

As far as one I like how can anyone not appreciate a minister who asks how religious faith is an acceptable reason to deny someone their full rights in a nation that is supposed to not be ruled by one view of God?

To me, this is what real democracy looks like. Ad-lib, impromptu questions from real, ordinary Americans in all their imperfections. Real questions, from real Americans, not pre-rehearsed questions that are watered down so as not to surprise a
    candidate or “offend” the establishment.

I hope this is a permanent change in the way we conduct debates in this country. Difficult times demand difficult questions and straight talk, not evasion and endless political nostrums.

The only problem that I have with this is the fact that the questions have still been filtered by CNN and they can still eliminate some good questions by “average” Americans.

[...] Hey, better late than never. I was live blogging the live bloggers during the debate on DWSUWF Monday night, but decided to spare Donklephant readers the real-time experience. You can thank me later. After a couple of days reflection and surveying the blogosphere, I distilled my conclusions into a more digestible form. Concluding thoughts: Biden was best, again. Richardson exceeded low expectations. Obama fell short of high expectations. Edwards fell short of low expectations. Kucinich met zero expectations. That other guy has white hair. Mike Gravel’s shtick is not as entertaining as YouTube videos. YouTube questions were better and more entertaining than Britt Hume. YouTube questions were not that entertaining. It is Hillary Clinton’s nomination to lose. She didn’t lose it Monday night. Chuck Hagel is the GOP’s only hope. The GOP has no hope. None. [...]
