Gallup: Obama Leads By 5
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Independents, McCain, Polls, RepublicansHe gained 2 since yesterday, which is interesting considering virtually nothing has happened in the past week except McCain’s negative attacks. Perhaps McCain’s “maverick” brand is being hurt by the politics of division?

Generally speaking, the structure of the race remains as it has been since early June, with Obama holding a modest advantage over McCain.Obama has begun a weeklong vacation in Hawaii. It is unclear what impact his absence from the campaign trail will have. On one hand, the country’s attention may be consumed by the Olympic games and the candidates might not get much attention anyway. On the other hand, to the extent voters are tuned into politics, McCain will have the stage to himself.
As many have pointed out who are smarter than I, if any candidate ends up beating the other by 5 points in the popular vote, you’re starting to get to landslide territory. But given that McCain has had an incredibly difficult time getting above 44% since Obama won the nomination, it seems likelier at this point that Obama is in the better position overall.
