Colin Powell As Republican VP?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Republicans, Veep

Does anybody honestly believe that somebody who hasn’t even endorsed McCain yet will take his Veep spot? Because, as of right now, many of the things that Powell has said about the candidates hints at a quiet endorsement for Obama.

Still, Politico puts the meme out there…

Retired Gen. Colin Powell is among the potential running mates who have been considered by John McCain, campaign advisers told Politico.

Powell was among the possible vice presidential choices the Arizona Republican senator was thinking of when he said he would not rule out a supporter of abortion rights, a key adviser said.

Campaign officials say McCain has told them not to discuss the process.

Folks, this will not happen. Guaranteed.

Still, McCain has a chance to pick a truly groundbreaking Veep. Because if he picks somebody like Sarah Palin or Meg Whitman, he could pick up a sizable enough portion of those pissed off Hillary voters to make things very interesting.

More as it develops…

Plus, two seventy-something year olds on the ticket would make a lot Republicans uneasy… it would mean a less-than-completely-remote chance of Nancy Pelosi becoming president.

Politico os just a pro-Obama mouth organ trying to throwing GOP off track.

Moreover, despite the Dems and the allied main stream media’s desperation to see Romney as McCain’s Veep, Mitt is clearly out, with (1) Obama doubling down on the class warfare theme (McCain’s 7 houses) and (2) McCain doubling down with ads showing the hypocrisy of Biden attacking Obama in the pimaries — Romney did way more than that contra McCain.

This leaves only Govs Sarah Palin and Tim Pawlenty. Pro-abortion Ridge and Dem-Lieberman were never real considerations, despite relentless media goading. Pawlenty’s lackluster TV performances, coupled with Palin pizzazz, the primacy of oil drilling and the ticked off women/Hillary voters, does now portend a McCain/Palin checkmate on the Dems. This is so albeit the Dems and liberal media dare not mention Palin’s name, that is, everyone but…..

And if there’s any question as to Palin being uniquely qualified to more than nullify Biden in debate, see the excellent discussion at palinforvp.blogspot.com

    Team McCain, well done!!!

i’ve heard more than one of my super liberal friends say that if Mccain picks a pro-choice VP or a female VP, they are going to seriously consider voting Mccain. I was really floored to hear that.

Palin is the best ticket. Conservatives unite. Get behinda McCain/Palin 2008 ticket.

This was probably a few campaign officials perpetrating some wishful thinking. They probably began the process knowing full-well that Powell would have nothing to do with a McCain ticket, and now they’re leaking it because they know Powell is still very popular. Justin’s right, hell will freeze over first.

    McCAIN
    PALIN THIS IS A WINNER!!

    If not
    McCAIN
    POWELL !!!!!!!!!!!!

Romney is McCain’s strongest choice for VP. He can deliver Nevada, Colorado, and possibly Michigan. A hefty bank account hasn’t stopped Dems from embracing Kerry, Edwards, and the Kennedy’s – among others. Voters care about a candidate’s capability and concern for them more than about the size of their wallet. Romney, though not perfect, will best match up against Biden in debates and in leadership experience. The fact that he is not a Washington insider is a definite plus! Romney’s comments about McCain aren’t nearly as damaging as the comments Hillary and Biden have made about Obama. Perhaps of most importance, no one on either ticket has the much needed economic expertise that Romney has. As for Romney’s religion, anyone who would use that as the primary reason to exclude him from serious consideration for VP is a bigot. I hope McCain will rally the conservative base and choose Romney. If he goes with Lieberman, I’ll vote for the most conservative candidate on the ballot (it won’t be McCain) and wait until 2012 when the country will be crying out for a true economic and social conservative.

Ummm… no. Only if McCain and Powell died together would that happen. If McCain died, Powell would immediately be sworn in, and his FIRST ITEM OF BUSINESS would be naming the emergency back-up.

If Powell died, McCain would also make naming the emergency back-up mission number one.

People in positions like this have their contingencies already prepared ahead of time and keep them ready to roll on zero-notice.

So the only way Pelosi (assuming she is even still speaker – a McCain/Powell ticket could have coat tails that sweep the GOP back into power everywhere) becomes President is if an attack managers to take out McCain and Powell together – and that is a danger no matter who is VP, no matter what the ages of the candidates.

That said, I doubt Powell will be chosen. I think Powell is glad to be retired.
