Gallup: Obama Up By 8

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, McCain, Polls

Well, looks like Americans really did think Obama won the debate.

Add to that the horrible Palin/Couric interview and McCain’s campaign suspension stunt, and you have the makings of a perfect storm that sees McCain with his lowest numbers since Gallup started polling.

And about the impact of the debate…

The full impact of the debate and its aftermath will not be reflected in the tracking data until Tuesday’s report, which will be based on interviewing conducted Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Still, Gallup’s one-day read on the standing of the two candidates on Saturday suggests that Obama held the lead over McCain among registered voters that night, just as he had for the two previous nights.

More tomorrow…

One can already see a substantial shift on the “no toss up state” map at Real Clear Politics. And I believe that’s based on rolling averages, not simply reports of the latest poll. This probably means that folks were already starting to swing toward Obama. Most likely due to the bad econ news pushing folks away from the candidate of the party seen as more cozy with Wall Street.

Check out that map, and not only does it show Obama with new strength based on the “no toss up numbers,” it also shows McCain with troublingly small margins in states he absolutely must have: Ohio and Florida.
