I suspect Obama is making a play to draw evangelicals away from the GOP at a time when the GOP is exceptionally weak and culpable for the mess we're in now. If there was ever a time to bring Christians to the Democratic party, it is now. Tossing aside GLBT concerns about Warren's anti-gay activities is an indication that Obama does not consider that brand of bigotry to be a disqualifier for a seat at his table. It sucks to be the ones who are sacrificed in a compromise.

What exactly is a "progressive" gay movement? Is it separate from your run of the mill gay rights movement? Or is it just something you pulled outta your butt?
This is about equal rights and living up to the word of the Constitution. The 14th amendment is clear that ALL Americans are endowed with the same rights and here we are on the cusp of 2009 with a segment of society fighting for equality.
This is a bone headed move by Obama. He needs to know there is a large gay community in DC and that's where the inauguration will be. Warren will incite boos from the crowd.
If Obamas words of unity were true why didn't he invite David Duke to speak?

<blockquote>
And that’s not necessarily the worst thing in a centrist country.
</blockquote>

The problem is one side is obviously wrong, why go to the center of that issue.
