Quote Of The Day – Health Care Vote Unlikely
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Democrats, Health Care“We’re going to take a little longer to get it right. Initially we had hoped for a full vote by then, but I don’t think it’s going to be possible.”
- Senator Dick Durbin talking about a pre-recess vote on health care legislation
Well, he should tell that to Pelosi and Hoyer, who are determined to have a vote in the House next week.
Let me ask a silly question…isn’t this legislation important enough to work through the recess? Because we all know that the media is setting up this thing as do or die before the August recess, so shouldn’t Dems suck it up and skip their vacations? Isn’t this the one piece of legislation that’s important enough to make them do that?

Good point, Justin; if it’s this time-critical (which I would debate), work through the recess. Right now the various pieces of legislation are over 1000 pages long, and my expectation is that every member of Congress who votes on this his read it, understood it, and solicited feedback from their constituents (a five day period perhaps?). Sure, my expectations are too high, but not unrealistic.

I think that if passage of this legislation is so critical that they would work through the recess as a matter of course. After all this legislation deeply affects their constituents !

Democrats are looking at the polls, and they are seeing less and less support as more and more information comes out. My guess is they actually don’t want this thing to pass and get blamed for its inevitable failures to fulfill any of the promises the public has been given by Obama.
Obama once said that middle class familes would never see “any form of tax increase, not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes…â€
Now it appears Obama is willing to break that pledge, as long as taxes on the middle class are not the “primary” source of funding for health-care subsidies, or “completely shoulder” the costs of shortfalls.
The public is listening and all of this hopey-changey stuff doesnt cut it any more, especially when all of Obama’s campaign promises so far have come with expiration daes.

If it’s really that important, then it’s important enough to take some time, settle the details and explain it and justify it, and get it remotely right. But the actions of the proponents to date have notably avoided that path, resulting in a major loss of support. Steamrolling vague and foggy and horrendously expensive “reforms” is notably fomenting doubt and resistance, as well it should.
Congresscritters have a tendency to fall back on blaming the President when something doesn’t go through, even if he’s of their own party. I’ve heard the rumbles of that already, Dems saying the bad response to date is due to Obama not providing enough leadership and direction on the issue.

What is the Rush? It would be a great legacy if it where to pan out. If it fails we all suffer. Obama is consistently demonstrating his lack of maturity by his rush to act tactics. I haven’t heard one thing about the cottage industries that have driven Health Care cost more than anything. Malpractice Insurance fueled by Frivolous Lawsuits and
