The establishment should stop trying to force a candidate down the throats of grassroot Republicans, they won't swallow.

This is the way I see it. Romney will be an outstanding President for all Americans if elected. With that said, I see a repeat of 2008. McCain and Huckabee performed a tag team on Romney and a weak candidate became the Republican nominee, which resulted in the Obama administration. Huckabee and Palin or whoever will perform another tag team on Romney to prevent him from obtaining the Republican nomination. The result will be 4 more years of Obama. The hatred within the Republican Party against an individuals religion is pathetic and must cease.

Romney's background as a investment fund guy isn't helping him either. Those guys elicited admiring hordes nine months ago. Not so much right now.

The rest of his resume is not great right now. His major accomplishment as Mass. Governor was a health care plan that isn't working too well, and he did a 360 on most of his moderate positions when he ran for President.

His problems will go away slowly. In 2012 I doubt investment bankers will be public heroes, but I also doubt they'll be universally despised. His flip-flops will be very old news, and Mormonism will have had four more years to show the other rightist Christian movements that it's with them politically. Theologically there won't be peace, but if Southern Baptists (who strongly suspect the Pope is the Antichrist), and conservative Catholics (who don't) can work together to beat the left there's no reason to think Mormons can't.

At this point Presidential speculation is just silly.

Dk:

George W. Bush's number was barely above 50% while Bill Clinton number were below 50% and what do these two have in common they both serve two terms. So we have plenty of time to take about the possible demise of President Obama.

Romney's problem is two-fold:
- The Christianist base of the Republican Party simply can't deal with the concept of voting for a Mormon
- Everybody else, who would be his natural constituency, is put off by his pandering to that base during the last primary season. It showed a lack of conviction IMHO.

If he hadn't been in the primaries last year, or if he had run from the center, he would be in a great position to step into the breach now. But he made his bed, and he's stuck with it.

Romney is still a Mormon and Palin is still an idiot. The public doesn't find either palatable.

Any Republican who can eschew mainstream conservative Christian (non-Mormon) values and at not come across as an obvious dolt will be the shoo-in for the 2012 nomination.

I think the economy is going to sink Obama's re-election, and in 2013 a Republican "dark horse" will be taking the oath of office. And FWIW, I'm not a Republican. This is just how I see it.
