Pelosi Backs Quick Iraq Pullout
By Justin Gardner | Related entries in The War On Terrorism, WarThe House minority leader is calling for our troops to withdraw as soon as possible. I think she’ll be on the wrong side of history.
From Reuters:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday backed a call by Democratic Rep. John Murtha to quickly start the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and said she believed a majority of her caucus supported it as well.“I will be supporting the Murtha resolution,” Pelosi said of his plan calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq at the earliest practicable date, which he said should be about six months.
Pelosi, a California congresswoman who opposed the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, said she believed a majority of House Democrats “clearly supports Mr. Murtha.” She said she was speaking for herself and would not press for a united Democratic position on the issue.
Pelosi had stopped short of endorsing the position of Murtha when he stunned colleagues on November 17 by advocating a quick withdrawal, saying U.S. troops had become targets that were fueling the insurgency.
Listen, I think Murtha’s idea of keeping some forces close in order to come back in is interesting, but I don’t think that’ll do much good. It’s the old, “Hey, you all better behave yourself” strategy. How many times has that worked?
I just can’t resolve the logic of these arguments. They don’t add up to me.
How about you?

I think its another example of politicians trying to “energize thier base”. But atleast is an alternative plan. More politicians need to get off the sidelines and start discussing the future.

Murtha’s plan makes sense on the assumption that the Iraqi “insurgents” are motivated by the presence of US troops. No troops, no insurgency, no need to call on the “over the horizon” US force. But if that assumption is wrong–the view of the hawk side of the argument–the bad guys will keep fighting for their own reasons and we’d have to go right back in with a worse position than before we left.
