That’s right. Come one, come all, to one of the biggest sales of mostly, sorta, never used trailers in the history of the world!
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A year and a half after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, FEMA is auctioning off at fire-sale prices thousands of trailers used by storm victims, raising fears among mobile-home dealers that the government will flood the market and depress prices.Mobile home dealers are finding that some potential customers would rather wait to make a deal on a used FEMA trailer than drop $25,000 to $40,000 for a brand-new one.
�People think they’re just going to get to buy them for nothing,� said Gale Crews, owner of Diamond State Mobile Home Sales in Hope, where FEMA is storing 20,000 trailers at the city’s airport. Some of the FEMA trailers will sell for less than half of what they cost new.
But again, they’re not just used trailers…
Some critics of the Federal Emergency Management Agency said the sale of emblematic of the way FEMA botched its handling of Katrina: FEMA ordered more trailers than it needed, it let many of them sit out in the open, exposed to the elements, and now, some fear, it is about to double-cross the trailer dealers.FEMA spokeswoman Debbie Wing defended the agency, saying it �wanted to be prepared to house as many victims as possible� when it bought the trailers. She said the agency is now trying to lower its storage costs by reducing the number it is holding in reserve for the next disaster.
Honestly, buyer beware on these. I’d go with the used ones before I’d go with the ones that just sat around near the Hope, Arkansas airport for a couple years. A lot of those got royally screwed up.

OK. FEMA is dumping their “extra” trailers. The hurricane season begins in 3 months & starts getting as bad as it gets in 5. Sounds to me like FEMA is holding a fire sale so they can buy new trailers in a few months. What does it sound like to you?

WHAT can we do to stop this waste by our gov’t ..the gov’t spends the tax payer money like it’s water these trailer should be given to familys that need them we spend billions of dollars helping other countries and do not help people who need help and homes in American ..
IT”S time we see some good done for other in need STOP THIS WASTE OF TAX PAYER MONEY the gov’t think everytime it wants more money we have to give give give no question asked maybe we need to vote on what they can buy an spend and take back our american right no one in Washington really cares about the people,just there fat pockets when will it stop

This is an embarisment to our country in front of other country’s.
Our Goverment waste, liked spoiled teenagers, in a rich enviroment
who does not know better. However, our goverment knows better
but are still spoiled and rich. We bought these trailors, us, the American people, not any fema director , goverment offical, or Prsident of the United States. We bought these trailors for victims not for Hope Arkansas. I am again ashamed of a decision my goverment has made, in reference to Katrina.

I hear more folks complaining about FEMA and thier handling of the disasters in AL, MS, and LA nearly every day and it is astonishing to me. The US Government is not here to play wet nurse to a bunch of whining crybabies who can’t do for themselves with the resources that they have.
Instead of complaining here about how FEMA is about to flood the market, how about getting in on that action. If these trailers will sell for less than half of their worth, then buy some and sell them on the open market at a profit. You know…capitalism? I’m pretty sure that’s how they work. I didn’t hear the trailer manufacturers or retailers complaining when FEMA came around willing to pay top dollar for these plain jane rolling homes.
It’s never enough, is it? If FEMA was even 10 homes short from the last round of storms, then everyone would be up in arms that the Gov’t wasn’t doing enough, then because they bought more than needed, the Gov’t isn’t doing enough…blah, blah, blah. I tell you what…how about putting the shoe on the other foot. Katrina comes ashore, you are the President of the US. You must deal with a catastrophe of enormous proportions. The Gov. of LA and the mayor of New Orleans, as well was most of the politicos down there are dirty, cheating democrats hell bent on making you look like an imbecile, even though it was their failings that caused such a huge loss of life. Now, you have half the population screaming and crying that the Gov’t isn’t doing enough. All of those dems have trained thier constituents that they are “due” for just about everything they could possibly want or need. Now, you must make a decision. Over buy, and have some waste, maybe, or, under buy, and risk killing citizens due to exposure. I think they made the right choice, but will learn from the overruns.
It really irks me when people complain, “I didn’t get this, I didn’t get that…” from the US Gov’t. How about giving a little?

Joe, thousands of people lost everything they own. These are poor areas where people have little to no insurance, or can’t even buy flood insurance because they’re below sea level. So, capitalism actually CREATED a situation where people have to ask for handouts, not the other way around.
The free market can not fix all ills. Nor can liberalism, nor can conservatism. It’s always a blend, and that’s why agencies like FEMA exist.

I am going on a trrip to west virginia with my habitat group it’s where we fix up under priveledged people’s home and i was wondering if we could buy one of the FEMA trailers for a couple who’s home we tried to fix last year but was severely damadged they have two kids to raise and living in this trailer is no way to live please respond.

Ya’ll can purchase FEMA trailers online by bidding at GSA Auctions. The travel trailers are stored at different locations throughout the country. I would strongly suggest that ya’ll take a close and personal look at these trailers prior to placing a bid - buyer beware.

My daughter loss everything during the Katrina Storm. She was not able to retrevie anything from her dorm in New Orleans. When does she get a Fema Trailor?
Most of all—a lot of people in New Orleans are still homeless…Why didn’t these people get FEMA Trailors….Futhermore…Lost of people that have been in tragities have been bought off through the the United States Govt…The holocaust victims, the chinese that were held in concentration camps in the U.S. Oh, but when it come to helping the citizen right here at home, we have to wait until the Govt. feel ready to lend a hand.
