Sam Nunn & Michael Bloomberg?

I think Nunn is more of a “behind-the-scenes” type of guy, but this is an interesting story nonetheless.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia said Friday he is frustrated with the direction of the presidential race and acknowledged talking with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others about an independent challenge to the major parties.“We’ve had conversations about frustration with the fact that the process is flawed,” Nunn said of Bloomberg, who has sent mixed signals about a potential independent White House bid. “I’ve told him … it may be time for some serious people to look at what I call a time-out and having people of good faith in the Democratic and Republican parties to come together and address the issues that the parties don’t seem to want to address.”
“We have not discussed any kind of joint strategy,” Nunn added in an interview with The Associated Press. “I have just had conversations with him.”

If Nunn is on a list of potential Bloomberg vice presidents, it confirms an emerging picture of what the mayor is looking for in a running mate. In May, Bloomberg had dinner with Senator Chuck Hagel, and Hagel publicly speculated about a ticket featuring the two of them. Then, in June, Robert Novak reported that Bloomberg had spoken with former Oklahoma Senator David Boren, now president of the University of Oklahoma, about “a role Boren might play in an independent Bloomberg campaign for president.” There are plenty of differences between Hagel, Boren, and Nunn, but they all fit a similar general profile. They have all served in the Senate. They all have experience with military and defense policy. They all come from states with large rural populations. Each of them has bucked his party’s leadership on controversial issues.
That’s a good strategy, but something tells me that Bloomberg will have to court a traditional Republican for a VP slot since he’s essentially a RINO.

I just did some research on this guy, it looks like he’d be really good for agriculture and decent on free trade. More on that here.

Sam Nunn would perform a real public service by running and forcing the major parties to focus on winning the vital center in 2008 rather than pandering to ideological extremes.
