Palin Misleading Statement #3?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election

#1 was the Bridge to Nowhere. I mean, that was just blatant, and I’m not sure why she keeps claiming she opposed it because that’s obviously false. Even Alaskan Republicans don’t back her up on that one.

#2 is the claim she’s some type of fiscal hawk reformer, when nothing could be further from the truth. After 7 years as mayor of Wasilla she left the town $18,635,000 in debt. And let’s remember folks, this was a town of about 7,000 people.

Now we come to #3, which is the “eBay myth” and it’s such a dumb lie that I’m having trouble believing that McCain himself is actually pushing it.

Basically, remember when Palin said she put the state’s jet up for auction on eBay? Well, that’s technically true, but what they didn’t tell she and the McCain camp didn’t tell you is it didn’t sell on eBay. And, well, I’ll let Wash Post take it from here…

It was sold to a businessman from Valdez named Larry Reynolds, who paid $2.1 million for the jet, shy of the original $2.7 million purchase price [...]

And yet, McCain claims something entirely different and Palin isn’t stopping him…

“You know what I enjoyed the most? She took the luxury jet that was acquired by her predecessor and sold it on eBay — and made a profit!” McCain declared in Wisconsin at a campaign stop on Friday. It could not be immediately determined what that profit was.

The video tribute to Palin that aired at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night made the same claim. “She signed sweeping ethics reform legislation, auctioned the governor’s jet on eBay,” the narrator said, citing it in a list of Palin’s achievements.

Does McCain not realize that she didn’t sell the jet at a profit. I mean, I applaud the notion that she did sell the private jet, but why lie about the fact that it sold for a profit? Why do that? It complete destroys the “reformer” message he’s trying to sell in these last two months.

Long story short, the press is uncovering one misleading statement after another, and as the press keeps digging they seem to be finding more and more, not the least of which is TrooperGate.

I certainly hope that they start to come clean with this stuff. Because we’re talking about the future of our country here, and the last thing Americans want after 8 years of George Bush is somebody who expects them to swallow half truths.

More as it develops…

Regarding #1 and #2, those could be real issues (although she wouldn’t be the first politician to change her mind on something).

Regarding #3, it seems pretty nit-picky to me. The important thing is that she sold it, regardless of whether it was on eBay or not. The only false statement you refer to is actually McCain, not Palin, saying that it was for profit. It seems a bit unfair to claim Palin is being deceiving because of what McCain said.
