Yesterday afternoon, a Muslim family with nine members including three children was ordered off an AirTran flight from Reagan National to Orlando. Passengers claimed members of the family had made suspicious remarks. The family claims they were just discussing the safest place to sit on the plane.
The FBI cleared the family and helped them secure [...]

India Won’t Move Troops to Pakistani Border

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in India, Pakistan, Terrorism

After last week’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai, many feared India would respond by using its military to escalate tensions with Pakistan. Now, reports indicate India will take a diplomatic approach.
Because there is not substantial proof that Pakistan coordinated or sponsored the attacks, India does not want to make a move that could put the civilian [...]

al Qaeda Releases Message for Obama

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Barack, Terrorism, al Qaeda

Al Qaeda has purportedly released a new message addressing President-elect Barack Obama:
In the video, Ayman al-Zawahiri, al Qaeda’s No. 2, castigated Obama’s foreign policy stances on Afghanistan and Israel and ridiculed the president-elect’s worldview. Al-Zawahiri compared Obama unfavorably to the late Malcolm X, an African-American militant who adopted Islam. [...]

2012 Talking Points In Action: Obama Equals Surrender

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2012 Election, Barack, Foreign Policy, Republicans, Terrorism, The War On Terrorism

No sooner did I write this post about the two memes I think will be the Republicans’ bread and butter for the next four years, than I see this editorial from UK’s The Spectator.
Melanie Phillips attempts to make the “America Is Losing Its Superpower Status” argument against Obama…
The impact of the financial crisis on the [...]

Palin Has Trouble Defining What A Terrorist Is

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, McCain, Palin, Terrorism, Video

Another excerpt from the NBC interview with Sarah Palin and John McCain and this time she gets a little stumped when defining what terrorism is.
Watch…

At this point I sort of feel sorry for the woman. She’s clearly in over her head.
And you can see that McCain is clearly uneasy when she’s answering the question. Perhaps [...]

North Korea May Be Removed from Terrorism List

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Foreign Policy, Terrorism

Maybe the axis of evil is down to just one member. Reports indicate that the U.S. will remove North Korea from the “state sponsors of terrorism” list. The move would come in exchange for North Korea agreeing to permit inspections of its nuclear facilities. No official deal has been announced as the State Department is [...]

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Civil Liberties, Law, Terrorism, The War On Terrorism, The World

Do we really think that this many people could be a threat to our national security?
From AFP:
A watch list of suspected and known terrorists, compiled by the US authorities, has ballooned and contains more than one million names, the American Civil Liberties Union said Monday.
The ACLU said it derived that figure from a Justice Department [...]

What Really Matters To Voters This Election?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Energy, Environment, Foreign Policy, Health Care, Independents, Iraq, McCain, Military, Polls, Republicans, Terrorism

“It’s the state of America now that is the most gripping source of anxiety for Americans, not Al Qaeda or Iraq. Anyone who thinks they are going to win this election playing the Iraq or the terrorism card — one way or another — is, in my view, seriously deluded. Things have changed.”
- Thomas Friedman, [...]

As hinted at yesterday, it’s happening and this decision will no doubt have far reaching consequences…
The announcement came after North Korea handed over a long-awaited accounting of its nuclear work to Chinese officials on Thursday, fulfilling a key step in the denuclearization process.
Bush called the declaration a positive step along a long road to get [...]

Obama Explains FISA Position

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Barack, Bush, Congress, Law, Terrorism, Transparency, United States, Video

More about his decision…

I know at least one of my fellow bloggers here at Donklephant strongly disagrees, and while I understand and appreciate the views of those who think this FISA legislation is still a gross violation of our civil liberties, the previous incarnation of this bill earlier this year (without tougher restrictions on telcoms) [...]

North Korea No Longer On Axis Of Evil?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Terrorism, The War On Terrorism, The World

Could this be a sign that our policy of engaging in carrot and stick diplomacy actually worked?
From the Washington Note:
Tonight, The Washington Note confirmed that the Bush administration will “ask Congress” to de-list North Korea from America’s “terrorist watch list.” This request will be made on Thursday — if there are no last minute, unexpected [...]

McCain Does Believe What Charlie Black Said?

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Foreign Policy, History, McCain, Pakistan, Terrorism

Yesterday, McCain denounced Black’s assertions that a terrorist attack would help his campaign, but here’s what he said right after the Bhutto assassination last year…
McCain called Bhutto’s death “a great tragedy. When something like this happens, you try to figure out who are the winners and the losers. It seems to me that the winners [...]

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in 2008 Election, Barack, Democrats, Economy, Energy, Gas, Health Care, Immigration, Independents, Iraq, McCain, Polls, Republicans, Taxes, Terrorism

Some surprising data here, but what’s not surprising is that the economy is at the very top of the priority list. And that has to be good news for Obama since he has such a wide lead.
Energy, Gas Prices – extremely important to 51%
Obama – 47%
McCain – 28%
Economy – extremely important to 49%

Guantanamo Decision Not “Worst in History”

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Constitution, Guantanamo Bay, Law, McCain, Supreme Court, Terrorism, The War On Terrorism, War

George Will takes issue with John McCain’s statement that the recent Supreme Court decision on Guantanamo detainees was one of the “worst decisions in history.”
Will’s complaint is as much about McCain’s hyperbole as it is about McCain’s opposition to the ruling. As Will notes, this is not a clear-cut matter and people of good will [...]

More US Forces Killed In Afghanistan Last Month Than Iraq

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Afghanistan, Bush, Foreign Policy, Iraq, Military, Pakistan, Terrorism, The War On Terrorism, The World, al Qaeda

And considering we have about 26,000 troops in Afghanistan, the overall percentage proves that Afghanistan has been a much, much deadlier place for quite some time.
Not surprisingly, I found this news in a story about an attack by the Taliban that freed hundreds of inmates from an Afghan prison:
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – U.S. and NATO troops [...]

Supreme Court Rules Detainees Now Have Legal Rights

By Justin Gardner | Related entries in Guantanamo Bay, Law, Supreme Court, Terrorism, The War On Terrorism, War

Big, big news.
The Supreme Court restored habeas rights for enemy combatants, and thereby acknowledged that the “War on Terrorism” has no discernible end and so detainees should be able to challenge indefinite detention.
More from AP:
In its third rebuke of the Bush administration’s treatment of prisoners, the court ruled 5-4 that the government is violating [...]

Keffiyeh Chic and Symbolic Meanings

By Alan Stewart Carl | Related entries in Conservatism, In The News, Islam, Terrorism

The blogosphere can cough up a lot of interesting controversies. This week’s revolved around a Dunkin Donuts’ online ad featuring Rachel Ray in a scarf similar to the Arab keffiyeh which has come to symbolize Palestinian militantism. The company pulled the spot after conservative commentators, most notably Michelle Malkin, harshly criticized Ray’s clothing choice, claiming [...]
